Performance Goals vs. Result Goals
An example of a performance goal is to get 70% of serves in. An example of a result goal is to win a regional or national championship. In press conferences, coaches are often asked whether their team could win again the next season. The smartest coaches will reply that this result type of thinking is not the best path to take. Best is to work on performance goals and the results will follow. Remember that performance goals are based on things we can control, such as movement, shot selection, and emotions. Some of the best coaches have players write down their goals. For example, a movement goal might be, "Whenever the ball is in play, my feet are moving."
