Coaching Young Female Athletes

  • Girls are more comfortable hitting tenacious groundstrokes from the baseline until their opponent makes a mistake. It can be very uncomfortable for them to take direct action to end points by going to the net and getting in their opponent’s face.
  • Girls may feel self-conscious about expressing aggression. They often approach difficult challenges cautiously and have difficulty sprinting and exploding effectively as they tend to hold their breath and tighten their muscles while running.
  • Girls will often limit their success if that success risks important relationships. In team situations, girls may think that going for the number one position means losing friendships.
  • Girls can also react emotionally to competitive situations, so much so that they often can’t think. They need to be shown in practice how to perceive tricky match situations and how to understand competitive behavior patterns to develop the confidence that allows them to cope during matches.
  • Winning may also present a conflict for girls. They can feel that they are being successful at the expense of someone else’s pain. Girls also tend to personalize competitive behavior from their opponents. Girls can say to themselves: “I can’t believe she is doing this to me!” Then they start focusing on managing the relationship instead of doing what it takes to win the match.
